My dear friend, Nathalie Mvondo, is part of a collective in northern California that is collecting books to take to people who have been detained at the Yuba City County Jail for reasons related to immigration. They are looking to collect about 50 books in English or Spanish, and a few in Mandarin. All books need to be in paperback.
Requests include all genres for adults: mystery, thrillers, Latin American Folk Stories, psychology (more specifically something on facial gestures), horror/terror, romance, vagueros…
Some of the authors and titles requested are Children of the Matrix (Spanish), Life And Times of Pancho, Ringside Seat to a Revolution by Daniel Romo, Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson (Maximum Rid series), Dean Koontz (Frankenstien series) Solo Para Hombres and books by Stephen King, Bernard Cromwell, R.A. Salvatore and John Grisham.
One of the most pressing needs of people who are in immigration detention is the need for simply “something to do”. Immigration detainees do not have access to programs designed to rehabilitate those serving sentences. In theory, they aren’t in detention long enough to justify the expense of providing programs. However, the reality of an overburdened immigration court system means that many languish in detention for months and even years. There are about 15 women and 160 men housed there. They are all adults, so no families, or children. Books are absolutely vital as an escape from the realities of immigration detention. Mission:
Faithful Friends is a grassroots visitation groups for people who are in immigration detention at the Yuba county jail. Community visitation programs work to provide visibility to immigrants who are in detention centers by visiting them and sharing stories. These visitors are often the only outside presence the detainees experience. They are in a unique position to protect against human rights abuses, making sure each individual is treated with dignity.
