DEEP BLUE SHE (#Mutiny2Unity #MeToo WeMix) is a music video/PSA for women’s/ LGBTQ+/human rights and racial/gender equality, featuring 100+ artist/activists of diverse backgrounds, ages, vocations—street artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, actors, teachers, librarians, advocates, a farmer, doctor, and a host of award-winning writers (mostly women of color), including Paula Yoo, Marina Budhos, Uma Krishnaswami, Cynthia Leitich-Smith and Elizabeth Acevedo. It also incorporates original art and world news footage(Women’s Marches, Standing Rock, November protests).
ALL ARTIST PROCEEDS TO ROTATING CHARITIES The first to be supported now through Jan is the MAHENDRA SINGH FOUNDATION.
Produced by Tanuja Desai Hidier and edited by Atom Fellows, the project was filmed grassroots/DIY style, by The We (all participants), on our phones (mostly), all over the world (since last November). The idea was/is to come together in an act of musical intersectionality—a Mutiny to Unity—to raise awareness of the song’s issues/themes (putting an end to violence against women, homophobia, racism, rape culture, ‘Othering’) and direct people towards help and ways to support.
And to celebrate The We. Our communities. All the skins we’re in. And let US be in charge of the lens, frame, focus. Do OUR dance.
