  1. I’m so excited about Marjorie Agosin’s novel, because I’m a huge fan of her memoir trilogy and her poetry! (She also blurbed my novel Gringolandia and we talked about her YA project back when it was a short story that appeared in one of Lori Marie Carlson’s anthologies in 2008.) There’s another book out this month that you should include as well, Maria E. Andreu’s The Secret Side of Empty (Running Press Kids), a contemporary novel about a 17-year-old girl who’s an undocumented immigrant from Argentina. The story is based on the author’s personal experience, as she too was living in the U.S. without legal papers, having come with her family from Argentina via Spain in the late 1970s; the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act put her on a path to citizenship.
