If you take the time to try to understand what’s behind all the books bans, the most obvious thing you’ll see is that it’s political. It’s orchestrated by people who are taking an unenergetic path to affect children. Rather than teach them to think, critique, or form opinions, book banners remove information sources with which they don’t agree. In a democratic society we need freedom of speech because it can lead to citizens who are literate. People who participate in governance need to be able to read, write, and think. Removing books from children does just the opposite.
Today, I mention a book that has been challenged that highlights the absurdity of this practice.
Rachel Renee Russell is an attorney by training but, her passion is writing children’s books. Her daughter, Nikki, inspired her to begin the Dork Diary series which has become an international bestseller. The books as if they are handwritten and drawn by the main character, Nikki Maxwell. With millions of books in print, the series has been honored with two Kids’ Book Choice Awards, an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Children, the Milner Award for Children’s Literature, and a Nickelodeon Kid’s Choice Book of the Year nomination. Her book, Dork Diaries; Tales From a Not So Fabulous Life, was challenged in North Carolina in 2022 and “weeded” or willfully removed from the school library in question.
Rachel Renee Russell has written over thirty books.
