Challenge it if you must, but The Hate You Give has become a modern classic. It updates the narrative of Black girls; embeds hip hop language into YA literature, contextualizes a moment in US history, and has remained on reading lists, course syllabi from the time it was published seven years ago this month. Her books, On the Come Up, and Concrete Rose have also been challenge. The Hate You Give has been removed from some school libraries.

Author, producer, speaker, and activist Angie Thomas, A former teen rapper, holds a BFA in creative writing from Belhaven University. Angie is an inaugural winner of the Walter Dean Myers Grant 2015, awarded by We Need Diverse Books. Her debut novel, The Hate You Give, started as a senior project in college. It was later acquired by the Balzer+Bray imprint of HarperCollins Publishers in a 13-publisher auction. Thomas is currently working as a producer for the movie version of On The Come Up.
