35 years ago, two Black parents were so disappointed in the availability of Black centered materials for their children that they had no choice but to write their own book. When faced with systemic practices that limited the availability of their book, they decided to create their own publishing company. These parents were Cheryl and Wade Hudson, authors of AFRO BETS A B C Book, and publishers at Just Us Books.
The success of Just Us Books made major publishering houses step back and take note of mismatch between the demand and supply of books for Black children. The Hudsons were game changers. Cheryl and Wade became a presence in the industry where they remains today.
I’m so thankful for the work they have done, for their integrity, faith, hope, and creativity. Congratulations, Cheryl and Wade!
