Paramount studios has taken Nickelodeon’s multicultural “Airbenders” to the big screen with an all white cast. This video explains the controversy.
Follow the controversy on Twitter: http://twitter.com/racebending
or on the Racebending blog which gives a great history of how Hollywood has continually misrepresented minorities in film. While this diverges a bit from the cover issue we’ve been addressing, we’re looking at characters that began in books and that are directed at young adults. If teens, those in their developmental years, are unable to see accurate representations of PoC, how will there ever be healthy attitudes individuals have about themselves or others who are of color? Green is not the bottom line. And, if it is, we’ll have to remind producers who controls the green.

This is OUTRAGEOUS–thanks for bringing it to my attention, Edi.

WHY? I liked this series and how can you turn this multicultural cast into an all-white cast? It doesn’t make any sense. Thanks for passing on this info! I saw an article in Ebony about race and image in media film but I didn’t get a chance to read it. It was a 6 panel of filmakers and looked interesting.

Wow! My daughter and I loved this show and watch all the reruns. I wont be able to go see this because it will ruin the image I already have of the characters. On the other hand, those characters are already being voiced by white people. Although the cartoon looks authentic, it really wasn’t. Hollywood just went one step further…
