“The Southern Poverty Law Center cites a 50 percent increase in hate groups and extremism in the US since 2000. As part of the Klanwatch project, the nonprofit monitors more than 900 such currently active groups, 22 of them in Mississippi, and nearly 400 concentrated in the remaining secession states: Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, and the Carolinas.”

More than 500 years ago, when the Spanish Conquistadors landed in what is now Mexico, they encountered natives practicing a ritual that seemed to mock death. It was a ritual the indigenous people had been practicing at least 3,000 years. A ritual the Spaniards would try unsuccessfully to eradicate.A ritual known today as Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
Cupcakes are really popular these days. They’re trending because they’re different. because Carrie and Samantha and Miranda realized their small size help with calorie control. In that same vein, Anali gives us delicious, classic single layer cakes. Filling the kitchen with the scent of fresh baked goods are such a wonderful way to savor fall flavors.
You’ve gotta love lists. We make them all the time. The help us organize, find what we what and know where things fit. Public lists can be problematic because people just don’t agree on what really fits. When lists are made public, if they want to be important they should state who made the list and what criteria they used, kinda like how this list doesn’t. I don’t know who Online School is, why they’ve created this list or how they chose The 1oo Best Book Blogs and of course it’s flying around the blogosphere. It contains the usual suspects, but there are a few more I’d like like to have seen there. I have to wonder why Mitali’s Fire Escape and the BrownBookShelf can’t just be seen as a good book blog, why there must be a separate category for them? I’m glad to see a few blogs with which I’m not familiar because I can always need a new blog to read.
Want more lists? Check out Chick Spaghetti’s compilation of lists of best of children’s books. I wonder why they put teen books on children’s lists.

You know, I am really sick and tired of not seeing HappyNappy Bookseller listed and my disgust is not based on my friendship with Doret rather it’s a matter of the quality and breadth of her blog. Doret crosses race, gender, age and genres so why is her blog ever listed?

Okay, I wrote Online. Probably should have waited. Well, I asked about criteria, who and suggested they make an effort to include more than popular sites which in part are popular because they are always sited. Lastly, I expressed my exasperation about the veribage about multicultural blogs. Multi blogs are not segregated communities targeting only people of color. Our aim is not only to celebrate POC lit among ourselves but to dismantle the misconception that POC books are not for the majority audience. A good book is for EVERYBODY.
