Only 6 Weeks Left!

In June 2008 the State Library announced receipt of a $1 million grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services for recruiting and educating 30 ethnically/racially diverse students for Indiana’s Librarians Leading in Diversity project. The first class of 10 fellows began classes in January with seven students in Indianapolis and three in Bloomington. The second class of ten fellows will begin class in August with seven students in Indianapolis and three in Bloomington.

Applications are now being accepted for the third and final cohort of Master of Library Science (MLS) I-LLID Fellows. Potential candidates must apply to the Indiana University School of Library and Information Science (IU SLIS) by August 28, 2009. Candidates whose undergrad GPA is below 3.0 should plan to take the GRE as soon as possible. Acceptance to the library school by October 30 is required.

The Fellowship Application process is now open until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2009. The application and more information can be found on the Indiana’s Librarians Leading in Diversity (I-LLID) webpage.

  1. Edi – that’s my dream job! I’ve been teaching since 1990 (sounds like I’m old, huh?) and I LOVE it. But, the librarian has always left me wishing for MORE… when my 4th graders go to library, all they do is take out books with little guidance. Then, she only reads to them if she’s in the mood. Since I am with them during that period, and if I see she’s not planning anything, I gather my buddies and read to them, otherwise….. nothing. Also, I’m always mentioning new stuff to her, book blogs, new stories, hot YA lit, and she’s just not that into it. Oh, and the library is just shelves, books, walls. She doesn’t like posters, plants, stuffed animals, displays… too messy she says.

So, I’ve always thought about what I would do differently… I’m thinking I might look into going for a second MA at my alma mater… if only it was free! 🙂

  2. Cassy,
Do take the time to look into this program! You don’t have to live in IN and stipends are included with the grant. They mentor you along the way and it is an excellent way to step into such a wonderful career!

  3. Doret,
Look at it as an investment in yourself. Look for grants and scholarships.Know that you might have to take one class at a time, or if you get a good scholarship you may have to go full time and live the life of a struggling student, but woman you have to do this!!!!
