Push by Sapphire, an ALA Book for College bound has hit the big screen! It’s premiering at the Sundance Film Festival. I found out about the movie while reading about the new batch of teen movies appearing at Sundance. I don’t know where else these movies will see the light of day. They sound like quite powerful peices of storytelling that give us insight into the world we’ve handed to our children and how they’re struggling to survive in it. I hope for the opportunity to see all of them, especially Push, very soon!

I just taught PUSH in my course on gender, terror, and trauma in AfAm culture–the students were horrified when I told them it would soon be a film starring Mo’nique…it’s hard to imagine so much dysfunction translating on the big screen; the book itself was quasi-pornographic, and when I told my students that teens read the book, they were stunned. It’s no worse than Zane, but really needs mediation, I think. Do your teens read it, and if so, what’s their reaction to Precious’ plight?

I loved Push. The author doesn’t talk around sexual abuse and parental neglect, she hits straight center. Is it pretty no but its real and sadly many teen readers will relate to Precious situation and those of her classmates. With everything against her there is something to be said and learned from Precious continued determination to improve her life.
And I am very exicted about the movie. Though I don’t know how I feel about Mariah Carey playing the teacher that helps Precious

WHAT!?!?! Mariah Carey? My heart just sank…is she a lesbian in the film or did they write that out?

It has been such a long time since I’ve read this, I’ll have to go back and read it again. I don’t remember the characters at all.

I am going to leave Mariah Carey alone, because every where I look online people are saying very good things about her performance and Lenny Kratviz as well. Sheri Shepard is in it also and I am very happy about this because she’s on The View and thats free publicity. Have you seen the actress playing Precious? Perfect casting.
