As part of the 40th annual NAACP Image Awards in the Literature category, we find the follow nominees for Outstanding Literary Work Youth/ Teens. The list leaves me utterly speechless.
• “Beacon Hills High” – Mo’Nique Imes Jackson, Sherri McGee
McCovey (Amistad)
• “Joseph” – Shelia P. Moses (Simon & Schuster)
• “Letters To A Young Sister: Define Your Destiny” – Hill Harper
(Gotham Books)
• “Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s American Heroes: Robert Smalls, The
Boat Thief” – Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., (illustrator Patrick Faricy)
(Disney Hyperion)
• “Sugar Plum Ballerinas: Plum Fantastic” – Whoopi Goldberg,
Nancy Cato, (illustrator – Maryn Roos)(Disney Publishing)
OK, I get it, they left off “Written by a Celebrity.”

Do you know how this list is chosen? This is very dissappointing. . How did Beacons Hills Hight make the cut? The writing was not good. There were a lot of authors who came out with great books this year who need a some PR. How does Walter Dean Myers, book not make this list? crazy, its was one of the best YA books of 08 .
But congrats to Sheila P Moses. I hope she wins and sells a lot more books.
The Robert F Kennedy book is in the wrong category. Its a picture book. (its for older kids but still) I am stating the obvious but apparently the people who put this list together didn’t know that.
I still have more to say, if you don’t mind I may blog about this so I can rant some more

I gave up on these image awards a long time ago. I understand that the NAACP is struggling to make itself relevant in the 21st century, but this is NOT the way to go…
