I’m sure this article on selecting Latino literature isn’t new, but it will be a great help to teachers and librarians who are new to selecting books from another culture. The ideas in the article could pertain to selecting books from any culture:
- avoid stereotypes: poverty and social issues should not always be the theme
- pay attention to the images: do people depicted in Mexico, Nigeria or Colombia live in villages and walk around with bare feet?
- particularly in non-fiction, watch the publication date to avoid pejorative vocabulary
- people of color should be seen solving their own problems
- the literature should accurately reflect the culture’s values, language, foods and history
Don’t just listen to me! Read the article!!
