Booked for Success: Reality in the Library

I had a few extra minutes on my hands while eating breakfast so I started flipping channels on the television.  Before I knew it, I was hooked on “Shear Genius”, a hair  competition for stylists.  And of course, they’re running back to back episodes because it is a holiday!!

Not too far into the marathon, I realized how many professions have these competitions for the best of the best in their industry accented with personal drama and turned into a television show.  So why not a YA library?

One week the competition could be on collection development, another library design,  one on programming and yet another on technology instruction.  Spice it up with reference challenge questions and impromptu book repairs  et voila!  ANOTHER REALITY SHOW!!  Sure, it may be difficult to build a fan base, so announce the competition in journals, blogs and listservs, with competitors required to deliver episodic updates in MySpace using blogs, podcasts and photo postings.  The final phase of the competition could be developed into a broadcast by Discovery or Disney.  The prizes?  A complete personal library, trips to the great libraries of the world, the car of your choice to drive work along with free gasoline for as long as  you keep the car…

Do I have a great imagination or what?  LOL
