Indigo Summer by Monica McKayhan
2007 Kimani Tru Press
main character: Indigo Summer
Indigo is beginning high school. Her best friend and next door neighbor recently moved away and is replaced by a fine young man Indigo knew in the second grade. She is attractive and well grounded but insecure about herself, as are many teen girls! She lives with both parents and adores her grandmother. One thing she knows: she loves to dance! Indigo is just discovering boys and dating, and is learning how to spot rotten apples as well as where her support is.
The books is told in alternating voices, that of Indgo and that of Marcus Carter, Indgo’s new neighor. The author’s voice is sometimes too apparent when she is providing useful information on topics such as Sickle Cell Anemia and menstruation, yet this didn’t stop me from staying up to finish the book!
no sex, no profanity, no drugs
themes: dance(talent)/ coming of age/ sickle cell/ goals
