I remember the Urban League! The organization was founded in 1910 to help African Americans settle in northern urban cities. Today, they continue to work to empower African Americans to enter the economic and social mainstream. Their website provides information on over 50 scholarships available to students of college who wish to pursue the dream of a college education. Their reading initiatives includes Rise and Read, a tool developed with Scholastic Inc to help guide African American and Latino parents in their efforts to develop strong reading skills.
HipHop Reader bridges Hip Hop, spoken word, poems, lyrics, and classic literature with adolescents’ passion for the technology and the Internet. Hip Hop Reader encourages high school students to read.
These are just a couple of the dynamic programs offered through the organzation that will empower today’s youth to be successful today AND tomorrow!
