Starting 1 July new grants totalling $790 million in funding for 2006-7 will be available to provide incentives for students to take more challenging courses in high school and ot pursue college majors that are in high demand in the global economy such as math, science, technology, engineering and critical foreign languages such as Chinese and Arabic. Nationwide, over 500,000 students are expected to qualify for these grants which will be administered through state departments of education.
