Nice Start!

walkertheatre1.jpgWhat a great way to start the summer! This afternoon, I made it to the Walker Theatre (www.walkertheatre.com) to hear Myrlie Evers speak. If you know your history, you know this was a treat! The event opened with Ms. Evers asking that the stage lights and house lights be balanced. See, when she came up, you wouldn’t speak in a room where you couldn’t see your audience. You needed to be able to watch for sudden movements.

Myrlie Evers-Williams is now working to establish the Medgar Evers Institute, a national nonprofit entity that will celebrate the achievements of Medgar Evers and other civil rights leaders, support the development of future leaders, and promote racial reconciliation and equality.

I found it particularly interesting to hear of her sisterhood with Betty Shabazz and Coretta Scott King. She spoke of the unique “club” they formed and the close ties they maintained while the other women were alive, and the divergent paths their lives took following the loss of their spouses.

I’ve not always been a fan of biographies, so I haven’t really read too many. That was, until I read Ms. Evers _Watch Me Fly_ (available at http://www.powells.com). I was able to be so inspired and uplifted by her story! I learned little things about life that I had missed elsewhere.imageDB.cgi.jpg

Today, I was nice to connect more fully to her story and to remember the power of our shared history as I sat in this small community at the Madame C.J. Walker theatre.
“fly strong and hard”!
